A practical guide for United Kingdom businesses
Making Tax Digital: why UK books must be digital
HMRC's Making Tax Digital programme requires VAT-registered businesses to keep digital records and submit VAT returns through compatible software, and it is being extended to income tax for self-employed people and landlords over set income levels. For a limited company, the relevant regimes are VAT and, in future, any changes to corporation tax filings. Zoho Books can be connected to HMRC for VAT submissions, which means your records and your returns come from the same source.
We set up the chart of accounts for FRS 102 or FRS 105 small company accounts, with VAT schemes configured correctly and a bank feed reconciled each month. Directors' loan accounts are kept separate, as they affect both tax and the balance sheet.
- GBP base currency with multi-currency support
- VAT codes for standard, reduced, zero-rated, exempt and outside scope
- Flat Rate, Cash Accounting or Annual Accounting scheme set before first return
- Directors' loan account tracked for section 455 tax
- Payroll journals posted from RTI submissions
Companies House and the corporation tax timetable
A UK company must file annual accounts at Companies House, generally within nine months of its year-end, and a confirmation statement every year. The corporation tax return, CT600, is due 12 months after the end of the accounting period, but the tax is due nine months and one day after the period end. Missing the Companies House date brings an automatic penalty, which rises with delay.
We deliver a reconciled trial balance and supporting schedules for your accountant, who prepares the statutory accounts and tax computations, and we calendar the dates so none is missed.
Switching to Zoho Books from Xero, QuickBooks or Sage
We migrate balances at a VAT period boundary, so the first return from Zoho Books starts with a clean base. Open sales and purchase invoices are imported, and bank feeds are connected to Open Banking where supported.
A parallel month, with trial balances compared line by line, gives you confidence before the old system is closed.
UK filing dates for a company with a 31 March year-end
| Obligation | Due date | Authority |
|---|---|---|
| Corporation tax payment | 1 January (9 months and 1 day) | HMRC |
| Annual accounts | 31 December (9 months) | Companies House |
| CT600 return | 31 March (12 months) | HMRC |
| Confirmation statement | Every 12 months | Companies House |
